1909 Ford Model R
The year is 1909.
Just over one hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes.
Here are some statistics for the Year 1909:
The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities
was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the
Eiffel Tower.
The average US wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year,
and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took
place at HOME .
Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION. Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.'
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for
shampoo.

Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health' (seriously?)
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
Try to imagine what it may be like in another

Jennifer and I just went out in the evening for a few minutes. We passed a big parking lot full of old and/or collectible automobiles. I saw a couple if cars that dated from the 1920's and several from the 1930's. This is popular here in the Detroit area - more than in many cities. After all, we are the Car Capital of the U.S.! There is a huge event in a couple of weeks in a near-by city, Royal Oak. They close down one of the five or six largest streets in the metropolitan area for part of a week-end, and people can drive their old or rare or fancy cars up and down the street all of the day and into the late evening. People who drive or ride in the cars often wear clothing of the time of the car, and this can be very colorful. Other folks park their cars in special areas and open the hoods and doors and let people see whatever special thing they have done to their vehicles. It is always very hot and there is no place to sit and no place to park your own car, it is not easy to get something to eat. I have not gone to this and do not plan to do so.
